How to use Quick Search

To find information, type in all or part of the medicine or company name in the Quick Search box. This is in the top right hand corner of the screen. Then press ‘Go’.

The eMC will search the product, generic and company information for the term you typed in. You will then see a list of all the matches that have been found. Click on the links to expand the lists or to view information on your chosen medicine.

When to use Text Search

The Text Search function allows you to search each SPC (and PIL) within the eMC for a specific word or phrase.

H ow to use Text Search

First, click on the Text Search link; you will then see the following screen:

To find all the SPCs or PILs that contain the words sedative and histamine, type in:

sedative histamine

Then click Search and all of the SPCs and PILs which contain the words sedative histamine will be listed.

Tips on using Text Search

There are three keywords and, or, not and " " (quotes) which can help you search.

Examples

You want to search to find all SPCs and PILs using two words, acute and asthma

Using and
and will return all documents that have the word acute and the word asthma, so you would type
acute and asthma

Using or
or will return all documents that have the word acute or the word asthma, so you would type
acute or asthma
With this example you could also just leave one space between both words which gives the same result as using or, so you would type
acute asthma

Using not
not will return all documents that have the word acute and not the word asthma, so you would type
acute and not asthma

Using " " (quotes)
" " (quotes) will return all documents that have the exact phrase "acute asthma", so you would type
"acute asthma"

The Text Search function is not case sensitive.

Text Search will only find exact word matches. For example searching for sedative histamine will not find any SPCs or PILs containing the words sedating histamine.

Text Search will find the words you have entered, regardless of where they occur in the SPC or PIL. If you want to search for words or phrases in a specific section of an SPC, use the Search by Section function.

When to use Search by Section

Search by Section allows you to search individual sections of each SPC (but not PIL) for a specific word or phrase.

How to Search by Section

First, click on the Search by Section link; you will then see the following screen:

To find all the SPCs that contain histamine within section 4.1 Therapeutic Indications, select ‘4.1 Therapeutic Indications’ from the drop down box. You will then see the following screen:

Type in the word ‘histamine’ and click the Add button. You will then see the following screen:

Once you perform your search, you will see the following screen:

Click on the links to view the documents.

Tips on using Search by Section

The Search by Section function is not case sensitive.

You can search for up to 5 words or phrases per SPC section.

Search by Section will find the words you have entered anywhere in the specified SPC section.

If you enter two or more words or phrases, Search by Section will only list those SPCs which contain all of the words in the sections you have selected.

For example, if you search for 'histamine' within section 4.1 Therapeutic Indications, Search by Section will return only SPCs which contain histamine within section 4.1 Therapeutic Indications.

If you wish to broaden your search by searching for words or phrases within whole SPCs, you should use the Text Search function.
