Topal PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET

Please read this carefully before you start to take your medicine. This leaflet provides a summary of the information about your medicine. If you have any questions or are not sure about anything ask your doctor or pharmacist.

The name of this medicine is TOPAL. Its active ingredients are Dried Aluminium Hydroxide Gel, Magnesium Carbonate and Alginic Acid.

WHAT IS IN THIS MEDICINE?

Each tablet contains:

  • Dried Aluminium Hydroxide Gel 30mg
  • Magnesium Carbonate 40mg
  • Alginic Acid 200mg

The tablets also contain Sucrose, Lactose, Silica Gel, Polyvidone, Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Caramel flavour, Vanillin, Strawberry flavour.

TOPAL Tablets are supplied in cartons of 28 and 42 chewable tablets.

TOPAL is an antacid which means that it counteracts the effects of stomach acid.

WHAT IS THIS MEDICINE FOR?

TOPAL is used to relieve discomfort resulting from the effects of acid on the lining of the stomach or gullet (oesophagus) in conditions such as:

  • Heartburn
  • Acid indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining)
  • Reflux oesophagitis (stomach acid coming into the gullet)
  • Hiatus Hernia (part of the stomach coming into the chest)

BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE

If you are taking any medicines, including those that have been bought over the counter, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking TOPAL tablets.

You should not take this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

If you have been advised to follow a low-phosphorus diet, have severe kidney disease or any other severe illness, or have been told you have high levels of magnesium or alkali in your blood, TOPAL is not recommended and you should check with your doctor.

TOPAL may interfere with the absorption of some drugs especially certain antibiotics (tetracyclines).

If you are diabetic, you should take this medicine with care because of the sugar content. Each TOPAL tablet contains sucrose 880mg and lactose 220mg.

If you have high blood pressure or if you are on a salt-restricted or low sodium diet you should know that each TOPAL tablet contains 40mg Sodium bicarbonate. This corresponds to 11mg of sodium per tablet. You should take this into account in the daily quantity of sodium you are taking.

If you are pregnant you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before using TOPAL tablets.

TAKING THIS MEDICINE

The usual dose for TOPAL in adults is 1 to 3 tablets 4 times daily after meals with the last dose at bedtime.

In children, the dose is half to one and a half tablets 4 times a day after meals with the last dose at bedtime. Check with your doctor before giving TOPAL tablets to a child.

If symptoms persist consult your doctor or pharmacist.

CHEW THE TABLETS CAREFULLY

As with all medicines, an overdose could be dangerous. If you have taken an overdose tell your doctor or go to the nearest hospital casualty department immediately.

WHILST TAKING THIS MEDICINE

TOPAL is well tolerated and any side effects which occur are likely to be mild. Nevertheless, if you experience any unusual symptoms you should tell your doctor immediately.

Do not take this medicine after the expiry date which you will find on the pack.

Store TOPAL below 30°C and protect it from moisture.
